Catch Up Post – Part One

I am so far behind on blogging my life due to the recent medical scare with our oldest dog, Katie. But, I promised myself that I was going to make a real effort to keep up with this blog this year, so let’s call this Catch Up Post – Part One. Mainly pictures followed by a brief description…in date order of course!

We recently celebrated my great grandma’s 97th birthday!

Grandma has the early stages of dementia, but she was totally with it that day. Telling stories and cracking jokes! She is a very funny lady!

Have I mentioned that we are five generations? My grandma just got the local yocal newspaper to write an article about us (complete with a picture). She is thrilled and so proud of this fact! I’m waiting patiently for my copy to arrive via Pony Express. 😉

Here’s just one more of grandma with her beads on…she was very happy.

Moving right along…the recap that you’ve all been waiting for…TAMALE DAY 2012!!! Dad arrives to pick me up Pre-6am. He’s alone. The balance of mi familia is sleeping.

We have arrived at the tortilleria to buy forty pounds of fresh masa! They are located on the west side of Chicago in a neighborhood that my dad is pretty familiar with. No one speaks much English here, but we always get through it. Check out my Yelp review here!

A couple photos from around the neighborhood…

Here’s another. Amazing art.

20120414-074716.jpg
And that’s us! Well, not exactly, but it is my family’s name and it was mine before I married my hubster.

20120414-074840.jpg
This is the pinnacle of our trip to get the masa. The Mexican bakery! That’s dad hanging out in front. Of course, no visit to a business is complete without one of these!

Sugary, fatty goodness. ‘nut said.

Masa before it gets some TLC.

20120414-075528.jpg
Dad mixing the secret ingredients into the masa.

20120414-075639.jpg
My turn!

20120414-075728.jpg
The masa is ready for spreading.

20120414-075817.jpg
Aunt Joan & Uncle John came all the way from Michigan for the weekend to spread the masa on the ojas! Actually, they probably came to eat the steaming hot tamales. It was so nice to see them!!!

20120414-080102.jpg
My baby sister, Mary, hard at work.

20120414-080226.jpg
Yay! The first pot of tamales is cooking!!!

20120414-080332.jpg
Aunt Tami working hard under her hat. I promise she is hiding behind there! I love her!!!

20120414-080453.jpg
Yet another masa spreader…little sister, Beth!

20120414-080552.jpg
My cousin, Chris, wouldn’t spread the masa if his life depended on it. But that’s totally okay because he’s the koolest kat I know (and he’s allergic to a secret ingredient, so he gets a pass). But, it was uber cool that he came to hang out with us for the weekend from Michigan too!

20120414-080919.jpg
Did I mention that we were also celebrating my Dad’s birthday that day? Dad. Dan. What’s the difference? None really. He’s the same great guy to me no matter what we call him.

20120414-081052.jpg
My soon to be brother in law, Steve, and my son, Michael, aren’t much on spreading the masa either. That’s okay. Glad they were both there!

20120414-081251.jpg
My sister, Catherine, and my husband, Anthony, cheesing it up for me. She spreads masa like a mad woman! Him? Not so much, but he sure loves to eat the tamales!

20120414-081734.jpg
Aunt Gina & Uncle Phil joined us for the day too! They are hard working tamale makers who drove over an hour for the day of fun. Can you tell that I really enjoy seeing my family?

20120414-082002.jpg
Tamales are ready!!!

20120414-082128.jpg
Oh Chris! What have you done?!?!?

20120414-082311.jpg
Cards…

20120414-082407.jpg
…and margaritas wrapped up our day.

20120414-082526.jpg
That’s just me being silly! After the margaritas. Remember, I didn’t drive.

Patty & Dad. Cutesy.

This completes Part One. Please stay tuned for Part Two.
